Part 2: Mattress Marie

After leaving Thanksgiving dinner with the conversation about pot, Matt and I headed east to my aunt's house, where most of my family was gathering for our Thanksgiving. Matt hadn't met most of my extended family. Little did he know how well he would get to know them in such a short time.
After we arrived, Matt met everyone, and we started to settle in for the night. My aunt, Marie, had some twin sized mattresses that she was going to bring out for Matt, me, and my brother, Ken, to sleep on in the living room. The three of us had been helping her gather the mattresses and get everything ready. At one point, Marie walked out of the bedroom carrying a mattress and spotted Matt sitting against another mattress that was leaned up on the couch. He was comfortable lounging with almost all his weight on the mattress.
Upon seeing this, Marie thought I was on the couch under the mattress Matt had. Feeling protective, she proceeded to put the mattress she was carrying on top of Matt. On top of the mattress, she put herself--making a Matt sandwich looking like this--

Marie
Mattress
Matt
Mattress

While still perched on top of the pile, Marie started this conversation:

Marie: I have to protect Jenny. (Long pause.) Jenny?
Matt (from between the mattresses--Marie still leaning on top) I think she went upstairs.

I was indeed upstairs, and the next thing I know, Marie is coming up to me telling me she thinks she ruined everything. As my mom says, it's not often that Marie is speechless, but she was this time. Matt, of course, thought it was HILARIOUS! For the rest of the weekend, every time he could, he would mention mattresses or body slamming.

From then on, Marie became known as Mattress Marie to us. To follow up, for my bridal shower thrown by the Psycho Aunts (my grandma, mom, and aunts), Mattress Marie gave us an inflatable mattress with personalized instructions on the top of the box. These instructions included the steps: Inflate the mattress; Lay underneath the mattress.

Super funny lady! I'm so glad she was able to see the humor in it (after a while). Love you, Marie!!!

Geesh! I'm sure mattress Marie has embarrassed her kids to death by now, if that's how she treats her niece!
