Matt and I are in Chicago--the first stop of our 9 day vacation. We flew in yesterday afternoon and settled in the hotel. Last night, we drove to Chicago in HORRIBLE traffic. It should have taken us about 20 minutes, but it took us about 2 hours! When we got there, we met up with my cousin, Adam. It was so good to see him! We ate at a hip restaurant called Sushi Samba (great suggestion, Adam!).
This morning, we were going to drive down to West Lafayette to go to the Purdue/U of O game. However, Mother Nature had different ideas. We're staying in a hotel by O'Hare. We're close to the freeway to West Lafayette, but the three access roads to the freeway were all flooded out and closed from heavy rains. So, we couldn't get down there. I know Matt was bummed because he wanted to see his alma mater (Purdue) play, but he put on a pretty good face. We were watching the game from our hotel room. Well, that is until the end of the halftime when hotel's fire alarm sounded. I'm so glad I happened to hear it and see the lights flashing under the door. The alarm was really quiet. Anyway, so, we evacuated. We went around the building to the lobby. There were several people sitting in there, and the desk staff didn't seem too concerned about the alarm still going off. A fireman wandered through the lobby a couple of times, again not in a rush. Luckily, Matt had picked up the car keys, so we headed out to get something to eat at the Walgreen's (the closest store on a non-flooded route). We never found out what the issue was, but we were obedient and evacuated, just in case.
We're supposed to head to Philly tomorrow, but there have been some delays already out of Chicago, and we anticipate some more tomorrow because of Hurricane Ike aftermath. So, keep your fingers crossed for us!!
On top of all the yuck going on, Purdue lost...
